Samsung officially announces the Gear S2

After plenty of teasing and a brief mention at its Galaxy unpacked event earlier this month, Samsung has officially announced the Gear S2, its round Tizen-powered smartwatch. Though pricing and release details weren't mentioned, Samsung has revealed the the smartwatch will come in two variants: the regular Gear S2, and the Gear S2 Classic which is aimed at those who "prefer a more timeless watch design, offering an elegant Black finish with a matching genuine leather band."

The Gear S2 features a round, 1.2-inch circular display with a resolution of 260x360. Samsung says the watch is 11.4 millimeters thin and also packs a 1.0 GHz dual-core processor and a 300mAh battery, which the company says will support 2-3 days of battery life. Even better, the Gear S2 sports NFC inside for mobile payments, and Samsung says it is working with partners to expand the utility of the smartwatch in new ways, "including smart car keys, residential room keys, and remote controls to manage a connected home."

Samsung is also touting its work with third-party partners and developers, noting that a number of apps optimized for the Gear S2's round interface will be available at launch. Also on tap are partnerships that will yield a variety of third-part watch faces and watch bands, so you shouldn't have trouble finding options to match your style.
